Sprouting Seeds

Sprouted seeds are packed with nutrition and enzymes.  They’re super easy to make and they keep in the refrigerator for up to a week.  You can even freeze them if you aren’t able to use them up in a week.

While they are simple to make, you do need to be around during the day to rinse the seeds/sprouts 4-5 times a day for 1-3 days, depending on the seed.  So this is a task to do on days when you are around home more.

They make a great addition to salads as well as to smoothies and other foods that can have added fillers, such as hamburgers, meatballs, burritos, tacos, a lasagna, a simple soup, eggs, etc.  They are nice to have on hand to add to whatever you are cooking up that week.

You will need to have a breathable cover for the top of the jar you are using (I usually use a quart-size Ball jar).  You can purchase special sprouting lids that are either metal or plastic at natural foods stores or order online.  If you do not have a sprouting lid, you can simply cover the jar with a layer of cheese cloth and use a rubber band or a Ball jar ring to hold the cheesecloth in place.

Ingredients

For 1 Person(s)

Recipe

  • 1/4 cup(s) sprouting seeds
  • filtered water
  • 1/2 lemon juiced or pinch of sea salt

Sprouting Seeds Directions

  1. In the evening, place seeds in a large jar and fill 3/4’s of the way with filtered water and add lemon juice or sea salt.  Cover the jar with a sprouting lid or cheesecloth.
  2. Allow the jar to sit on the counter overnight to soak the seeds.
  3. In the morning, drain the water from the seeds and rinse thoroughly.
  4. Add fresh water to the jar while swirling the seeds around in the jar to thoroughly rinse them.  Drain all of the water out of the jar.
  5. Place the jar upside down and at a tilt in a small bowl.  This allows the excess water to drain while allowing fresh air to circulate in the jar.
  6. Repeat the rinse, drain, and upside down tilt 3-4 more times each a day.
  7. The seeds are sprouted when they have a longish tail extending from the sprouted seed.  You will know they are done growing when you see no growth for a couple of rinses.
  8. When completely sprouted, you can leave the sprouting lid on the jar or put a regular lid on the jar.
  9. Place the jar in the refrigerator.  Sprouts will keep for up to 1 week.
